Hazardous Spill Response

HAZARDOUS SPILL RESPONSE TRAINING
Industries require liquids/chemicals of different types to be used. To lubricate machines and cool parts of machines to perform a variety of tasks, chemicals are used. Sometimes spills occur and it are controlled by the correct equipment and effective preparation. This type of action helps to avoid accidents that result financial loss to the organization. The organization is required to implement effective response plans to prevent accidents caused by the spillage of chemicals. Appropriate spill response equipment availability and providing proper training to all employees are important before the spill response plan gets implemented. So, companies build the procedures with some steps like determining a spill response team, where spill response equipment is kept, containers that are involved, and developing internal reporting and designating areas recording the liquids for their locations.

IHSM has designed the training to increase the awareness level of participants and provide information about defensive responses to such situations and the ability to take the steps safely and quickly to control the chemical spill. The hazardous spill response training provides knowledge of how you should respond to spills of hazardous chemicals in the workplace. You will gain a basic knowledge of dos and don’ts in the event of hazardous chemicals spills. The hazardous spill response training focuses on the recognition of hazards associated with chemical releases, assisting in the protection of people, the environment & facilities, and the initial steps to be taken to mitigate the release of the material and the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE/RPE) to be worn while such a situation.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES
The objective of this training is to increase awareness among the workforce about how to respond in the event of hazardous chemicals spillage in the workplace. The participants will also learn the steps to be taken to mitigate the release of hazardous chemicals to assist in the protection of workers and the environment from the impact of hazardous chemicals spillage.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
This training is specially designed for the organization that is dealing with or using chemicals and is planning to set up a ‘Hazardous Spill Response Team’ in their facility or already has a team but needs to brush up on their knowledge, skill, and performance level. Following is the content that would be included in the training module:

  • Selection of personal protective equipment (PPE): As a spill responder, you can wear the PPE for protection while working with the spill.
  • Start to confine the spill: You will be able to choose the correct absorbents for oils, coolants, solvents, and water and quickly limit the area by diverting, blocking, or confining the spill.
  • You will be eligible to stop the source: Plug a leak from a damaged drum or container, use the product for stopping leaks from punctured pipes or drums, and transfer liquids from the damaged container to a new container safely.
  • You can evaluate the incident and implement cleanup: Once the spill or leak is stopped, it is time to reassess the incident and develop an action plan to implement and clean up the spill. At this time, responders make sure to deal with the incident by using absorbents, i.e., adequate supplies of spillage response. The people who attend this training will become health and safety emergency responders and help save the environment as well.

BENEFITS OF TRAINING
Hazardous Spill Response Training offers a comprehensive view of chemical substances’ properties and their behavior after they get split:

  • It also provides you with the ability to beware of hazards and know the information that comes with chemicals.
  • It also helps you to ensure the response team follows a safe way of working, prepares a plan to deal with any spillage, and fully assesses the risks.

WHO CAN DO THIS TRAINING?
Everyone involved in the hazardous spill response activity to control the spill of chemicals in the workplace can attend this training to be competent in the safe handling of hazardous spill situations. This training is useful to general workers, chemical handlers, waste cleaning workers, laboratory workers, emergency response team members, and safety personnel because these people always encounter such situations at the site and need to be competent enough to handle the chemical spillage safely.

HOW WE DELIVER TRAINING

  • PowerPoint presentations
  • One-to-one interaction
  • Practical training
  • Case studies
  • 3D animation movies
  • End-of-section quiz
  • Q & A sessions

ASSESSMENT

  • The assessment of the learners is done through a multi-choice questionnaire (MCQ) set to assess their learning approach and their understanding of what is taught to them.
